PLACE-Urbanity
a Psycho-Ethnographic Portrait of Melbourne

Jeffrey Shaw
2001

PLACE-Urbanity DVD is a DVD-ROM version of the interactive installation (PLACE - URBANITY, a Psycho-Ethnographic Portrait of Melbourne) commissioned by CINEMEDIA for the Australian Center for the Moving Image in Melbourne.

Melbourne is a notably multicultural city due to the size and diversity of its many immigrant communities. The city also has the reputation as comedy capital of Australia. PLACE-Urbanity DVD presents fifteen fully panoramic photographs of various urban locations in Melbourne, identifying the districts of a specific immigrant and/or ethnic community. When exploring each of these panoramic scenes the viewer can locate a comedian, hanging upside down, and when clicked on will tell a joke. Each comedian is a member of the specific ethnic community represented, and the subject's jokes reflect, with critical humour, their distinctive relationships to the Australian context.
